The bird died yesterday. Butterfly was very sad and after they buried it in the yard she cried herself to sleep and slept until after lunch. The kids walk across the street for the free summer lunches every day. Usually we all go together, but since Butterfly was in bed Echo and I stayed home. The old man that walks around the neighborhood [the one I caught throwing rocks at DJ] must have thought that I was with them. Usually, he is pretty sneaky about the stuff he does at our house. Yesterday, he walked right up on the porch and started yelling at the dog, throwing rocks at him from a few feet away. I could see him out of the window and when DJ yelped I ran outside. The old man walked away and refused to stop when I called to him. I had to literally run in front of him and block his path to make him acknowledge me. He said that he did it because DJ barks at him [DUH! He throws rocks at the dog all the time, OF COURSE the dog barks at him!]. This time, I called the police.

again with the birds Either the birds are getting stronger or my kids are getting smarter. The first year in this house, they stood by and watched helplessly as baby birds fell out of the nests and died. The next two years, they returned the birds to the nest each time they fell [with similar results]. This year, they have 'adopted' a baby and made it a nest on the side of the house. I tried telling them that handling the bird would only make matters worse, but they are desperate to 'save it'. A couple of days have gone by and not only is the bird still alive, it actually flew a few feet yesterday.

"The July/August 2007 issue of Archaeology Magazine features a four-page article about Graffiti Archaeology. It's by far the most thorough, in-depth article anyone has ever written about the project, with tons of images, and interviews with real archaeologists to get their take on it. I could not possibly be more proud." [link]
Graffiti Archaeology is a fantastic site that allows you to view changes in graffiti over time. Photos of sites taken by different photographers at different times are stitched together. It really is interesting to see how these works evolve.

So, I saw the pictures of Ana's pups getting a bath in the baby pool. What a great idea! I've been waiting for Mike to get paid so that I could get the dog groomer over to the house. I'm going to have him shave DJ's hair off again. It is getting hot and the poor thing is starting to shed all over the house. Anyway, he was getting a little stinky so I figured I would try washing him myself. BIG mistake! We don't have the baby pool anymore, so I used a saucer that we take to White Sands. It was way too small, but it didn't matter because the dog went CRAZY. I had to tie him on the leash and ended up holding him in my lap while the kids dumped water on us. I was soaking wet... He wouldn't let me wash him. He wouldn't let me dry him. He wouldn't let me brush him. It was a huge mess. Needless to say, I didn't get any cute, soapy pictures. And he still stinks.
